The 71-page Grade 2 spelling workbook offers exercises for 12 words in each of the 34 weekly lessons except the review lessons. Each 2-page lesson has 2 main parts.

The Teacher's Edition is a pupil book with the answers filled in plus a 31-page section of teacher instructions in the front that explains each lesson.

The 71-page Grade 3 spelling workbook offers exercises for 13 new words and 3 review words in each of the 34 weekly lessons except every sixth lesson, which is completely review. (After Grade 2, each book in the Spelling by Sound and Structure series reviews from the previous book.)

The Grade 4 spelling workbook is composed of 34 weekly lessons including a review lesson every six weeks. Bound with a tough, soft cover, it can be used as a text or as a consumable workbook. It contains many well-illustrated pages.

The Grade 5 spelling workbook is composed of 34 weekly lessons including a review lesson every six weeks. Bound with a tough, soft cover, it can be used as a text or as a consumable workbook. It contains many well-illustrated pages. Each lesson includes a list of twenty words. Sixteen of these are called "New Words" and four are "Review Words." The Review Words are selected from Grade 4 spelling lists or from earlier lessons in this book. Each review lesson introduces no new words, but reviews the 80 new words of the previous 5 lessons.

Grade 6 provides 34 weekly lessons. Each regular lesson lists sixteen New Words and four Review Words. Each lesson has four main parts and an additional part to challenge able students.

The previous books in this spelling series concentrate on basic phonetic patterns. Beginning in Grade 7, the main emphasis shifts to another important factor that affects spelling, namely, the study of word elements--roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

The main purpose of any spelling course is to teach pupils how to spell words correctly. Earlier books in this series seek to accomplish that purpose by focusing on phonetic patterns. In grade 7 and grade 8, the focus shifts to word elements--the roots, prefixes, and suffixes that make up words. Studying these elements will help students understand why words are spelled as they are.
