The 71-page spelling workbook offers exercises for 13 new words and 3 review words in each of the 34 weekly lessons except every sixth lesson, which is completely review. (After Grade 2, each book in the Spelling by Sound and Structure series reviews from the previous book.)
The lists of new words are presented in type and cursive writing. Each 2-page lesson has 3 main parts. Part A serves to strengthen the pupil's understanding of the meanings of the new words as they work with synonyms, antonyms, definitions, picture clues, context clues, and categories of words.
In Part B, pupils work with phonetic patterns such as beginning and ending sounds, long and short vowels, consonant blends, digraphs, double consonants, and so forth. Part B also works with word structure as syllables, plurals, verb forms, and suchlike. Pupils work mostly with the words in the week's word list. But they also get practice in using the spelling patterns to spell other words.
Part C teaches beginning dictionary skills, focusing on alphabetical order and in which part of the dictionary to find a word.
The Teacher's Edition is a pupil book with the answers filled in plus a 36-page section of teacher instructions in the front that explains each lesson. Sentences that use each spelling word are provided for the teacher to use in administering the spelling tests.
