The hardcover pupil's text has 170 lessons (counting tests), most being two pages long. Lesson concepts are clearly explained to the student. This book continues to review the basic facts of the four number processes. It reviews two-digit multipliers, the long division process, measures, large numbers, fractions, and decimals. Other important areas of study are the introduction of two-digit divisors, three-digit multipliers, multiplication and division with decimals and fractions, ratios, geometry, square measure, graphs, and scale drawings. Reading problems are exercised regularly.
"Supplementary Drills" for extra practice are provided in the back ofthe pupil's book. They are arranged according to skills.
A tablet of 84 speed drills provides a short, timed exercise for every even-numbered lesson. (Speed Drill numbers agree with the lesson numbers.) These drills cover a wide range of skills taught in Grade 5.
The Teacher's Manual comes in two hardcover volumes, with Chapters 1-8 in Part 1, and Chapters 9-17 in Part 2. Each lesson shows the pupil's pages full size with answers filled in. Extra pages give detailed guidance for the teacher in lesson presentation. Duplicate copies of speed drills and tests at the back of the manuals also have answers filled in.
The lesson plans in the Teacher's Manual are provided as a base to teach the lessons effectively. They are an important part of this math course, especially in the review pattern. It is recommended that beginning teachers follow the plan as closely as their schedules allow. The daily lesson plans include the following parts.
"Objectives" state the primary goals of the lesson. A concept is marked with a star when it is introduced for the first time in this math series. "Preparation" lists what the teacher should prepare for class in addition to studying the lesson. "Oral Drill," conducted in class with pupils' books closed, reviews and reinforces material that has already been taught and also prepares students for learning new concepts. "Speed Drills" (in every other lesson) emphasize speed and accuracy. "Teaching Guide" is the core ofthe lesson. This part gives a step-by-step plan for meeting the lesson objectives; there is generally one point for each objective. This class-time work should prepare the pupils to do the lesson in the book with a minimum of teacher help. "Extra Practice" is optional practice included in some lessons for those teachers who desire it. The concepts reviewed usually relate to some of the review exercises in the pupil's book. "Supplementary Drills" suggests appropriate drills for additional work.
The Grade 5 Arithmetic lessons are designed for about 30 minutes of class time and 30 to 45 minutes of assigned work. Suggestions for grading lessons, speed drills, and tests, and for altering the lesson plans (if necessary) are given in the Teacher's Manual.
The 17 chapter tests are bound in a booklet with tear-out sheets.
